Falls in older Australians

Falls are a significant concern for older Australians, as falls are a leading cause of injury-related hospitalizations and deaths among this group of people.
Did you know:
- According to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, falls are the leading cause of injury hospitalisations among people aged 65 and over in Australia
- In 2018-19, there were 129,000 hospitalisations due to falls among Australians aged 65 and over, and falls accounted for 40% of injury-related deaths in this age group
- Factors that can increase the risk of falls among older Australians include:
- Poor balance and mobility
- Chronic health conditions such as arthritis, diabetes, and Parkinson's disease
- Medications that affect balance or cause dizziness or drowsiness
- Vision and hearing impairments
- Environmental hazards such as uneven flooring, poor lighting, and clutter
- Strategies that can help reduce the risk of falls among older Australians include:
- Exercise programs that focus on strength, balance, and mobility
- Reviewing and adjusting medications as needed
- Regular eye and hearing check-ups
- Home modifications such as installing grab bars and improving lighting
- Wearing appropriate footwear with good support and non-slip soles
- Using assistive devices such as canes, walkers, and wheelchairs as needed
- Attend a falls prevention group session hosted by Generation Care
By addressing these risk factors and taking appropriate measures to reduce the risk of falls, older Australians can improve their safety and quality of life.
